About Chipewyan Prairie Dene First Nation

A proud member of the Athabasca Tribal Council, honouring our Dene Suline heritage while building opportunities for future generations

Dene Suline: We call ourselves Dene Suline, meaning “The Original People.” Chipewyan Prairie Dene First Nation is a Treaty 8 nation, and our traditional lands, called No Ha' Nene, radiate outward from the Christina River watershed. Denésoliné is the mother tongue of members born before 1987.

Population: Our Nation has 1,028 registered members, with 375 living on our own reserve, 15 on other reserves and 638 off reserve. Our leadership is chosen under a custom electoral system.

Location: Our main reserve is Janvier 194, south of Fort McMurray, Alberta, along with Cowper Lake 194A and Winefred Lake 194B. People began moving to the Janvier area in the 1920s.

Culture: From time immemorial, our people have hunted, trapped, fished and gathered on the lands we call Dene Sulinene. Chief and Council consult Elders and community members on matters affecting the whole community, and our Nation's business trust includes partnerships in oilfield development, land clearing, and camps and catering.
